WELCOME COLBERT!

February 17th, 2010

Vancouver Special would like to welcome Stephen Colbert to our little city. If you would like to commemorate his Olympic visit, come by the store and pick up a  ’Defeat the World’ poster. The posters were designed for The Colbert Report by Shepard Fairey and feature Stephen riding a bald eagle. Because nothing says ‘the Olympics’ better than a little propaganda.

BRIGHT LIGHT

February 11th, 2010

Vancouver Special is pleased to support the BRIGHT LIGHT public art project, in conjunction with the 2010 Cultural Olympiad.

We are selling limited edition umbrellas for $20, with all proceeds going towards the event. The umbrellas feature a map of Chinatown and the DTES  in black+white figure-ground, with the various venues and events pinpointed in red. They pop-open for easy use, and are a very cool souvenir for art-y and design-y out of town visitors!

There are also some great events happening at the Candahar Bar and the LIGHT BAR over the next couple weeks.

Check out local synth-pop band “Christine” on Friday night at 11 pm!

More info about BRIGHT LIGHT here.

Journeys to the East: Lecture on Arthur Erickson and Japan

7pm November 25th at the Vancity Theatre

The Arthur Erickson Conservancy (AEC) presents an illustrated lecture by Professor Michelangelo Sabatino, who, in the summer of 2009, retraced Arthur Erickson’s first journey to Japan in 1961, revisiting the sites Erickson mentioned in his seminal articles in Canadian Architect in the 1960s. Prof. Sabatino will trace Erickson’s journeys and writings on Japan and their effect on his work, including the Canadian Pavilion for Expo ‘70 in Osaka. He will also situate Erickson’s deep relationship to Japan in a long-standing tradition of modern Western architects who appropriated cues from Japanese art, architecture, and landscape.

This illustrated presentation, at Vancity Theatre, will be followed by a Q + A discussion with Prof. Sabatino and a hosted reception in the theatre’s Atrium.

Ticket information & reservations are available at: http://www.arthurericksonconservancy.com/event.html

Tickets (talk + reception) are $75.00.  Students $25.00.

Payment online or by cheque. You may also reserve seats by return email and by cheque: Arthur Erickson Conservancy, 4785 West 6th Avenue, Vancouver, BC, V6T 1C4.
