Sori Yanagi was born in Japan in 1915, and is one of the most respected product designers in Japan. His best known design is the 1954 Butterfly Stool which is in the permanent collection of the Museum of Modern Art in New York. The stool is made of two slightly curvilinear plywood elements, employing the materials and methods of the Eames and infusing them with a Japanese sensibility. His design philosophy is not only simple but functional and practical and represents a perfect synthesis of Eastern and Western design. In addition to furniture, Sori Yanagi also designed lighting, glass objects, cutlery, children’s toys, underground rail stations, cars and motorbikes.
The stainless steel kettle is Yanagi’s best-selling design in Japan, with more than half a million kettles sold annually! It was the recipient of Japan’s Good Design Award in 1998 for exceptional design and functionality. Some of its features are steam holes located on the side of the lid (which prevent the handle from getting too hot), a large surface area for the base which speeds boiling time, a wide opening for easy cleaning, and a slender pouring mouth with prevents dripping while pouring.
